KIBLA Maribor, Roundtable talk:
Roundtable conversation organized by Agnes Momirski
KIBLA, Kiblix festival for intermedia art
11th of November at 19.00
Digital princesses and cyborg princes
This round-table discussion aims to highlight the recent development in artists / curatorial practices that are deeply concerned with the topics of technology, gender and self-identity.
The increased digitalization of everyday life has been shifting the notions of gender, self-identity, subjectivity and the way it's being produced. The use of technology with access to multimodal online interaction created a new type of contemporary consciousness, that fluidly runs through different formats and modes of presentation. This consciousness inherently rejects all dichotomies, moving beyond the male/female and other binaries. Personality, self-identity and gender, are complex aggregates of heterogeneous elements. These elements become resources which we can use, or even buy and sell while scrolling online. Voice, image, body, language, become autonomous entities and ghosts of what once belonged to the more strict dichotomy of female or male, old or young, beautiful or ugly.
How do we perceive the contemporary consciousness that goes beyond binaries and offers an abstracted experience of the human self?
How do artists use social media, the notion of outsourcing and human capital, and gender/identity related elements, to showcase subjectivities that emerge through online experiences?
How can art help us make sense of these complex relationships between the body, the self and it's online representation, as well as it's economic and resource value?
Agnes Momirski will guide a conversation exploring digitalization and the changing contemporary consciousness, and how it can be used as material for artistic or curatorial practice.
